Get words!

Within 24 hours of signup, you will receive your first text message from Text Tutor . This message will contain a vocabulary word & definition. Later that same day, you will receive a message containing a sentence using the word. This will repeat every day. If you signed up for 2 or 3 words/day, then you will receive those definitions and sentences during the day also.

Your definition might look like this:

Hello,
I have a new word for you:

insidious [in-sid-ee-uhs]: somewhat
cunning or deceitful; treacherous; wily

Enjoy! - Tex Tutor

Your Sample Sentence may look like this:

Hello,
Here is a sample sentence for insidious:

Jodie's insidious manipulation of
events made the truth hard to obtain.

-Tex Tutor

Study!

TextTutor will let you have about a day to learn your words, then you will receive a message containing a quiz. That message might look like this:

Hello,
Please reply with the correct choice:

insidious

1 - clearly visible; easy to be seen
2 - somewhat cunning or deceitful
3 - flammable
4 - characterized or resulting from
    much sitting

Review the options and note the number or letter of correct choice. Let's say that you decide that choice #2 is correct for the example above. Choose reply on your phone to send a message to the number that sent you the quiz. In the text for the message, simply type the option. So your text message would look like this:

2

If your phone or your carrier adds a signature to the message, don't worry, Tex will ignore it. Just make sure that your answer is the first item in the message. It is very important that you reply to the same number that sent the quiz.  Tex Tutor uses several different numbers to send messages and you must reply to the number that sent the quiz.  Also, you must send the response from your phone number.

If you get the question right, Text Tutor will send a reply message to you within a few minutes that might look something like this:

That's Right!
insidious - somewhat cunning or
deceitful

Let's say that you respond to this quiz with a 3 (which is wrong). Then Text Tutor will respond like this:

Sorry, the correct definition of
insidious is:

somewhat cunning or deceitful.

I'll quiz you again on this later.

Tex Tutor

A few days later, you will be given another chance with any word that you missed.

Once you reply to a quiz, consider deleting it from your inbox, or move it to another folder. That way, you won't forget and reply to it again later. Text Tutor will re-use the same option letters, so if you respond to a quiz twice, Text Tutor may take the second response as an incorrect response to another quiz. If you accidentally send a message to Text Tutor that doesn't start with a valid response, then Text Tutor will send you message like this:

Sorry, but that is not a valid
response. Maybe you already
replied to this quiz.

TextTutor Commands

At any time, you may reply to a Text Tutor message with a single word to request more information.  Currently, Text Tutor understands help, quiz, and score.

If you send help to TexTutor, he will reply with a brief list of commands that you can send.

You Send:
help
TextTutor replies
Text a command to TexTutor
score - current score
quiz - send up to 7 unanswered quizzes

If you send quiz to TexTutor, he will re-send quizzes that you have not answered.  This can be helpful if you don't always answer a quiz right when you get it or if the message got lost or deleted.  Tex will only send 7 at a time, so if you have a lot, you will need to answer some of your quizzes before texting quiz again.

You Send:
quiz
TextTutor will re-send up to 7 quizzes

If you are wondering how you are doing with your answers, just reply to any Text Tutor message with the word score.  Tex will send you a text message containing your current score.  You get 10 points for each quiz you get right the first time.  If you missed it the first time, but got it right later, you get 5 points.  Your score is a percentage of your points to possible points.  If you have unanswered quizzes, they don't count for or agains you.

Limitations of Text Messages

The nature of text messages and the way that they are handled by cellular carriers make them somewhat unreliable. Occasionally, Text Tutor might send you a message, but you never receive it, or you receive it several hours or even days later. Likewise, you might reply to a quiz, but the message gets lost. Text Tutor realizes that this is possible and wants to make sure that you receive full value for your experience. When reviewing your Progress Report, you may notice that Text Tutor recorded a word, but you never received the definition or sentence or quiz. Just click "resend" in the progress report and all the messages related to that word will be resent to you in addition to your regular messages.
